Assembly Instructions
To Disassemble U-Joint
Joints with 7⁄8” and larger (O.D.) can be disassemble per instructions. Joints 3⁄4” and smaller have small pin riveted in place and therefore can’t be disassembled without breaking and replacing rivet pin.
Support joint rigidly with small diameter pin in a vertical position. Press out small pin, being careful not to lose the lock ring which is in the recess of the center block. Once small pin is removed, remove large pin then forks will be free.
To Re-assemble U-Joint
Mount parts as shown in drawing, making sure lock ring is in its recess of center block. Insert a pointed aligning pin (not provided) into the small hole and push it through, following with the small pin which will automatically lock itself into place.
Lubrication Instructions
Universal Joints are NOT pre-lubricated at the factory prior to shipment
This enables machining of the universal joints without degreasing the parts. This also enables utilizing your preferred brand of lubrication.
Universal Joints must be lubricated prior to use
For applications where the lubrication retention boot is NOT used: Apply a liberal amount of lubricant via the oil passage or ball spring oil fitting in the large bearing pin. Sizes 3⁄8” – 7⁄8” have the oil passage while 1″ and larger joints have oil fitting. Light duty, low angle operation may require only occasional lubrication.
For applications where the lubrication retention boot IS used: Apply a liberal amount of lubricant via the oil passage or ball spring oil fitting in the large bearing pin. Sizes 3⁄8” – 7⁄8” have the oil passage while 1″ and larger joints have oil fitting. Light duty, low angle operation may require only occasional lubrication. For high angle, high speed operation or extreme dirt or moisture conditions, daily lubrication may be required. Next install boot onto the universal joint, centering it over the knuckle. Secure one end in place with provided tie. Using a grease injector nozzle hooked to the end of a hand grease gun, insert nozzle under unsecured end of boot, filling the boot three quarters full with appropriate grade lubricant. Remove grease gun nozzle and secure second tie in place. Cut ties to desired length. Once boot is secured in place, compress boot outside diameter by hand to force the lubricant into the bearing areas.
Refer to lubricant manufacturer’s specifications to assure lubricant meets your operating criteria.
